Notes: The above performances are obtained from condenser water system that has:
  1. Scales and corrosion at pipes and condenser tubes due to conventional treatment method.
  2. Cooling towers are thoroughly cleaned after every 200 hours of operation.
  3. Conductivity of water is maintained at below 1100 ms/cm at all time through bleeding.
  4. Pump strainers are cleaned after 100 hours of operation.
  5. Chillers are properly maintained and serviced by the chiller venders.

Expected Performance:

• Anti-scaling & De-scaling:
No more scaling on new pipes and heat transfer surfaces.
As for old scaled system, 20 ~ 30% de-scaling rate after four weeks of continuous operation; recover 50% of the heat transfer efficiency lost after three months of continuous operation; 100% elimination of old scales and prevent further development of new scale after half to one year of continuous operation.

• Anti-corrosion:
Within 10 days of continuous operation, corrosion in the water system will be significantly reduced. After 3 months of successive operation, corrosion basically in controlled. The ultimate corrosion rate to the system will reduce down to less than 0.125 mm/year.

• Energy Conservation:
Can expect not less than 2% energy saving from scaled and corroded heat transfer system after eight weeks of continuous operation.

Working Principles:
I. For anti-scaling and de-scaling:

• When water passes through SC II Water Treatment Device, the polymerization force of the water molecular is reduced, which causes structural deformation and a series of tiny physicochemical elastic changes (e.g. increase dipole moment, polarity strengthening etc.), eventually increases the hydration and scale-dissolution capacity of water.

• When water under the influence of the electric field, the arrangement of saline ions in the water such as Ca2+, Mg2+ changed, making them more difficult to adherence onto the wall and thus prevent the formation of scales. The specific energy field will also change the crystallization procedure of CaCO3, it prevents the formation of calcite, but provides the required energy for crystallization of aragonite.

Research carried by Prof. Rosset (France National Science Research Center) had shown that as the results of aragonite crystal present in the treated water, the scale prevention effect can last for 48 hours.

• When treated, the surface Zeta potential of the suspended particles and colloid will change, which destabilize flocculation and have higher tendency to be precipitated and separated. Precipitation will be bleed-off and/or drained off at low point. Turbidity of water thus improves significantly.

• Active oxygen is produced when the water passes through the device, it will participate in crystallization and speed-up the destabilization of colloids. For scaled system, active oxygen generated will change the crystal structure by destroying their intermolecular electronic combination force, which transforms the old hard scales into loose soft ones. The loose soft scales will then peel off gradually in small pieces. The process will continue till all the fragments are peeled off, achieving a 100% de-scaling effect.

II. Working Principle for Anti-corrosion:

• The shell of S C II Water Treatment Device, i.e. the metal pipe section will act as the common cathode in the system, thus restraining the electrochemical corrosion of piping system (external current protecting cathode).

• Active oxygen generated will react with the dissolved iron (Fe) in the water and form a Fe3O4 membrane only on the steel surface. This prevents further corrosion to the corroded surfaces.

• As the generation of microorganisms and scaling in the water system are in controlled, microbiological corrosion and deposit corrosion are minimized and eliminated.

III. Working Principles for the control of bacteria and algae:

SC II Water Treatment Device is very effective in disinfecting water with growing microorganisms (e.g. bacteria and algae). The principle behind is that the device will change the biological environment of the water, making it unfavorable for the algae and bacteria to survive. In details:

• Every organism has its own specific biological living environment. The change of the electric field surrounding the organism body will influence the distribution and movement of electric charge inside the organism body, which in turn affect the life of the organism. Microorganisms on earth normally lives in a electric field intensity of 130 V/m. By changing this intensity, the physiological metabolism of bacteria (E. Coli), e.g. gene expression program, enzyme activity etc. are changed and/or affected, which resulted in abnormal bacteria life and thus death of the bacteria.

• There are many channels that the bacteria cell membranes come in contact with its surroundings. These channels are single and/or complex molecular, which ions can go through. The adjustment of the ion channels will affect the life of bacteria and the functions of the cell. The electric field created by the SCII Water Treatment Device outside the cell will destroy these ion channels on the cell membrane, which in turn changes the interior electric current that use to adjust the functions of the cell. The transient current in the strong electric field will also penetrate the cells via these conductive channels, which causes a deathly electric shock to the cell due to high movement speed of electrons.

• When water passes through the electric field, the dissolved oxygen in the water is activated and active oxygen such as O2-, OH, H2O2 and 1O2 (O2- is hyper-oxide anion radical, +OH belongs to hydroxyl group, H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide and 1O2 is oxygen of single state) are produced. Active oxygen radicals will create harmful aging effects to microorganisms and death of organisms. (1) O2- may destroy important large biological molecular and bring damage to microorganisms; (2) O2- will promote pre-oxidation of the microorganism membrane, thus accelerating their senility.

Model F is an enhanced version of model D. It senses the water quality and creates stronger modulating electrical field to achieve the same function.

The working principles above are backed by researches carried out in Shanghai TongJi University, sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission Foundation.
